HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

St Francis Xavier’s Kutama College is Catholic Boys’ Education Institution of the Diocese of Chinhoyi administered by the Marist Brothers. It has a rich history that extends to a century ago. Many great minds and notable personalities have walked in its corridors. But how did it come about? The college is part of the Kutama Mission which was founded in 1914 by Fr Loubiere SJ. He worked hard to evangelize the people around with special regard to children whom he taught religion. In 1920 Kutama Teacher Training college was started together with Subs A,B up to Standard four for training as well as teaching practice of those in subsequent classes. When Fr Jerome O’Hea came in 1931 he diversified operations in at Kutama Mission and a hospital was added which today is known as Fr O’Hea Memorial Hospital. With a lot of work at the mission Fr O’Hea faced difficulties with the demands of the administration of the School, the Hospital, the dispensary and the teacher training program. The results of the school were not very standard and the government Inspectors in the then Rhodesia asked His Lordship Bishop Chichester to look for competent staff. God answered his prayer. How? In 1939 five Canadian Marist Brothers, at the invitation of by Bishop Chichester, arrived at Kutama Mission and took charge of the Educational program. They were led by Br Luis Patrick who became the first Director and the mission developed in leaps and bounds. Thus Kutama College joined the global community known as the Marist Family. It is a worldwide network and community of Marist Brothers and Lay people who follow the spirituality and charism of St Marcellin Champagnat in educating young people to know Jesus. St Marcellin Champagnat was a young French priest who founded the Marist Brothers in 1817 and his humble spirit and work ethic inspire Marist Brothers, Lay people and youths all over the world. By 1945 Kutama College had an enrolment of 450 students. The Brothers introduced the Junior Certificate course in 1946 and the Higher Primary Teacher Training was introduced in the country and subsequently at the College. In 1950 the Matriculation course was established. In 1957 came the Rhodesia Junior Certificate and ‘O’ Level Cambridge courses. In 1985 ‘A’ Level was established with a strong prominence to sciences. It was the only one in Zimbabwe to use computers in the science lessons. During the war the mission in 1978 the mission was closed and the school temporarily moved to in Westwood to reopen again in 1980. The school has for the past century given Education to Zimbabweans and stands proud to have nurtured notable politicians, industrialists, economists, educationists, medical doctors and religious men. The Brothers have a noteworthy impact on the people they serve in their special Marist way.
